There are many different attitudes about how small groups should be led. Some should be guided through rules by a leader, some should just be open sharing with all members with no interruptions or guided sharing by leader or members.
In the RESET method, we use the ECHO process. We do this
- to keep the person sharing on track with their specific explanation, elaboration, and embrace of their new narrative, so they do not get distracted by other peripheral issues and lose momentum in their immediate pursuit of understanding that one Life Pattern.
- because members only have a limited amount of time to share in each session, and it is easy for the discussion to become chatter about random incidents that are bothering them, or simply stream of consciousness talking about everything that crosses their mind. Participants need to make the most effective use of the time they have together.
- to help the participant pay attention to the importance of certain words or phrases they have said, and in particular, opposing and contradictory beliefs revealed by their statements.
It is important to remember that this process requires listening carefully to the person sharing as well as to the Holy Spirit.
The ECHO process involves writing down key phrases and bottom line details shared in the ongoing narrative.
- Write each as if it was the headline of a newspaper article, using only the most important words.
- Do NOT interrupt the person sharing UNLESS they have moved away to unrelated topics. Raise both of your hands when you recognize they are drifting and wait for them to stop speaking. Repeat their last statement before they went off topic. Let them resume their narrative.
- Once they have finished, repeat back to them what you have written and ask them to listen to and evaluate what you say as if it was originating from someone else. Let them see in writing what they said aloud.
- Give them the opportunity to re-read the key points and soak it in.
- Let them share any new truths recognized.
Pay special attention to:
- E – Events and Emotions
- C – Confusion and Contradictions
- H – Helplessness
- O – Others
We present the sharer with their own words and let them re-examine their narrative, the people involved, their experiences and their beliefs from another perspective without telling them what it means for their life. For that realization to be embraced and accepted, the sharer must recognize it for themselves.
RESET ASSIGNMENT:
1. Have you ever listened to someone else talk and think to yourself, “do they not hear what they are saying”? What kind of things did they not realize about their thoughts?
2. Has anyone ever pointed out to you illogical or unrealistic thinking on your part? How did you react to that piece of information? Were you open to accepting what they had to say? Did it have an effect on your life?
